Fair warning to the masses: Some (or, you know, quite possibly all) of the following article will piss some of you off. And that’s okay with me. I’m here to help small business owners and my fellow creatives in the most soul-centered and joyful way. If you aren’t down with that, then well… okay. 🙂
If you’re a fellow entrepreneur or creative or in any way at all invested in the online business place, then you know the feeling of being bombarded with different online course promotions from a zillion different business owners on the daily. You know the feeling of “Well so and so is taking this course and it looks like they’re killing it in their biz – so shoot, should I take it too?” or “I probably won’t even complete this course and it’s a lot of money but I really should sign up for it because so-and-so is telling me to and gosh darn, they’re just really convincing me.” Blah blah blah. Yada yada yada. Give me a freaking break.
Like literally. Give me a break from all of these course promotions. I’m going to say this loud and clear: You do not need to sign up for one more online course right now.
You need to get off of Instagram, out of your email, away from the Facebook groups, and do the dang work. Remember that one online course you signed up for this winter and never actually completed? Go finish that course. Give it your all. Take notes. Implement what you learn.
I’m not a total hater of online courses, by the way, peeps. Not at all. I’ve taken a few online courses myself (some I’ve finished, some I haven’t) and admire, respect, and have learned from some great course creators out there (Jenna Kutcher, Tara Gentile, Ramit Sethi, and Mariah Coz are my favorites, if you’re wondering – they are each a genius and I would recommend their courses and their content day in and day out – but ONLY if you complete and implement them).
However, I think a lot of us have shiny object syndrome and every time there is a new course on the market and our eyeballs see it and our ears hear about it, we for some reason think that in order to be successful we must sign up and take this online course.
And I’m calling bullshit on that.
Again, we need to just do the work.
We need to log off of Instagram, stop mindlessly scrolling Facebook and Pinterest, stop comparing our path to strangers on the internet, put our head down and do our own damn work.
Doing the work isn’t as easy as constantly comparing, or searching for the next best business tool that will take you from mile 2 to mile 200 in thirty days (cause that’s rare, for real, and results like that only come from DOING THE WORK). It’s going to take focus, dedication, determination, grit, and some anxiety that you’re missing out on things to get you from point A to point B.
If along the way of actually DOING THE WORK you find yourself stumped and confused and aggravated and constantly trying to research said thing, then I think it could be a wise decision to purchase whatever online course you see fit in resolving THAT specific problem. But not the random course on making your Instagram feed look pretty (it goes way beyond just a pretty feed) that you found by happenstance when looking for other said helpful course, and not the random course that someone is trying to pimp out to you because they’ll make some affiliate cash if you sign up via their link.
Online courses can be incredibly transformative, life-changing, powerful, crazy helpful things. But when you start collecting a lootttttt of monies worth of them and don’t really find yourself finishing the course or implementing what you were taught, then you aren’t anywhere closer to your goals than you were the minute you pressed ‘confirm’ on your purchase.
So, please, trust me when I say that you don’t need another course. You need to just do the work, okay?
Stop having shiny object syndrome. Stop thinking you’re missing out. Go do the work you were made to do.
